Can I Sponsor My Family for a Green Card?

  • 2 min read

Immigration to America is the dream for many. Finding a way to come to America and going through the citizenship process can be daunting, even when you have all the information you need on how the system works. In our office, we work with our clients across the world to achieve their dream and know just how important it is to you.

One of the questions we are frequently asked relates to helping a family member on their journey to citizenship. Specifically, we are asked by United States citizens how they can help non-resident family members with the process. Let us share key insights on this important conversation with you.

First, the answer is yes. A United States citizen can sponsor a family member on his or her journey to become a permanent US resident. The starting place is often a Green Card. To be able to help your family member obtain a Green Card you will have to be able to show that you have enough income or assets to support your family member upon arrival in America.

You are able to petition for family members including:

  • Husband or wife
  • Children, although their marital status can have an impact
  • Parents
  • Siblings

The Petition for Alien Relative is Form I-130. Through this form you can demonstrate your family relationship. Our office can guide you through this process and work with you as there are times when this can be combined with the Application to Register Permanent Resident or Adjust Status, Form I-485.
There are many steps to this process. Filing is just the first one after you make the decision to help your family members.  At the Law Offices of Suzanne St. Luce, P.A., our staff is qualified to offer a wide range of legal services, including immigration.
